Top Gun: Maverick: Expert Says, “Uniforms Out Of Sync!” Set To Release After A Long Delay

Lately, the 1986 Top Gun sequel film was delayed for three long years, thanks to the pandemic. But now, fans would be thrilled to know that Top Gun: Maverick is all set to premiere in a couple of months. The film was originally set to release on July 12, 2019. However, the premiere was postponed so that the production could work out all the complex sequences. The film suffered more delays due to COVID-19 and scheduling conflicts.

While the fans eagerly wait for the action-drama film’s release, reporter James LaPorta has pointed out some discrepancies in the uniforms that have been used in Top Gun: Maverick. However, the movie was made under the close supervision of the US military, which allowed the production crew access to the military bases and the fighter aircraft which will feature in the movie.

The film follows Test pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who dodges an advancement in rank on purpose after 30 years of service. One fine that Maverick is called and put in charge of training a bunch of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission. Maverick is ordered by his fellow Naval Aviator friend and his former nemesis Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. Iceman is now a four-star Admiral and serves as the US Naby Pacific Fleet Commander. They are joined by Maverick’s late best friend’s son, Lt. Bradley Rooster” Bradshaw, and Radar Intercept Officer, Lt. Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. But what is this uniform fiasco? Keep reading ahead to find out!

James LaPorta Pointed Out The Inconsistencies In Iceman and Cyclone’s Uniforms

The Top Gun creators and cast have worked closely with the US Navy to portray the aviators realistically. However, James LaPorte from the wardrobe department might have missed a trick with the ribbons on uniforms. LaPorte pointed out that the ribbons were out of order and made no sense for the characters.

For instance, Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Commander of the Pacific Fleet now, was seen wearing two Meritorious Service medals in an official picture. He also had two Sea Service ribbons in various spaces on his rack. The US Navy uniform guidelines are that an officer can wear all or some ribbons. Iceman chose to leave Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy “E”, Navy Expeditionary, and Humanitarian ribbon that a young Lt Kazansky donned in the Top Gun movie.

Meanwhile, Jon Hamm’s character Vice Admiral Cyclone seems to have had an exciting career. Cyclone has three stars on his Good Conduct Medal, which means he served 12-16 years as an enlisted sailor before getting commissioned. The award required four years of continuous service back in the 1990s. While Cyclone also became the Vice Admiral and had a purple heart, he is missing senior awards like the Legion of Merit or the Defense Superior Medal.

It could be advocated that the discrepancies on the uniforms are to avoid the criminal code of the US Navy. However, the law allows flexibility to theatrical or motion-picture production to wear the uniform portraying the armed force without discrediting the force. It is believed that the lack of technical advice on the film set might have been the reason behind the inaccurate flitches in the uniform.
