On top of that, Fox has not clarified any specific reason behind the cancelation. However, there are speculations that the low viewership of the second season in comparison to the first season might have been the cause of not picking the show for Prodigal Son Season 3.

Actor Lou Dimond who plays Gil Arroyo in the series, took to Twitter to express his disappointment about the cancelation. In the tweet, he wrote, “Wow. Gutted. Didn’t see that one coming. Might be taking a few days away from the platform #Prodigies. Just know that you have been the most wonderful, entertaining, brilliant fan base I have ever encountered. Much Love.”

On the other hand, fans have also been running multiple social media campaigns for the revival of the series. But unfortunately, there has been no response from the network yet. However, there is a chance that some online streaming platforms may pick up the series for Prodigal Son Season 3 if they realize its potential.

In the series, Malcolm and Martin have a complicated relationship. Malcolm poses some traits of a sociopath that are always in danger of arising when conferring with his father, who is a serial killer. Therefore, fans have always seen Malcolm conflicted working in law enforcement at the NYPD and dealing with the darkness that lurks inside of him. Meanwhile, Malcolm’s sister Ainsley also suffers from alike sociopathy, and she has even committed murder. So, when the series returns for Prodigal Son Season 3, the uneasy tension among the family will likely be explored further. 

The episodes of Prodigal Son ofter revolve around particular police investigations. Through those cases, the series’ central drama is slowly unearthed. Therefore, the series is likely to continue with its unique pattern in the third season unless Malcolm completely falls prey to his sociopathic tendencies in the story. Of course, since the series is determined just as much by spontaneous plot twits as its overall storyline, Prodigal Son Season 3 will bring a lot of surprising twists and turns for the viewers along the way.

Michael Sheen essays Dr. Martin Whitly, Malcolm’s father, while Lou Diamond Phillips plays Malcolm’s mentor and NYPD Lieutenant Gil Arroyo in the series.

Is Prodigal Son A Real Story?

Based on the dark and gritty tone of the series, many fans have often wondered if Prodigal Son is inspired by real events. Well, the answer is No, ‘Prodigal Son’ is not based on any particular true story. The series is an original story penned down by screenplay writers Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver. It displays two sides of the law from the eyes of the characters of Malcolm and Whitly. Theirs is a highly unusual father-son relationship. Even though there are no real-life events behind the show, Prodigal Son is a result of days of brainstorming over the plot and main characters.

Showrunner Sam Sklaver once stated that the protagonist of ‘House,’ Dr. Gregory Hous, has served as an inspiration for the series. However, the medical theme of the series squabbles with ‘Prodigal Son,’ which mainly descends into psychology with family at its center. Therefore, the crimes spin around the collaborative essence of Malcolm and Whitley’s complicated personalities.

During a discussion, Michael Sheen described his swell of interest in serial killers at the time of production and the significance of holding himself in reality. He mentioned a serial killer known as Dr. Harold Shipman, who used lethal injections to kill over 218 people between 1975 and 1998 before he was eventually captured.
